Nagaland RTO

In Nagaland, the Transport Department was established as per the statutory requirement as mandated under section 133-A of the M. V. Act, 1933 and corresponding section 213 of M. V. Act, 1988 after the State was formed. The powers of the Department were regulated by the provisions enshrined under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 erstwhile M. V. Act, 1933, Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 and the State Act for Motor Vehicles. The duties and functions of this department interalia included:

(i) Licensing and registration of the Vehicles,
(ii) Collecting road tax and generate revenues thereby,
(iii) Levy of Goods tax and passenger tax,
(iv) Issuance of driving licenses,
(v) Issue licenses to conductors,
(vi) Renew and grant fresh permits,
(vii) Control the pollution emanating from Motor Vehicles,
(viii) Create public awareness on safety on roads.

At the directorate, the Department is headed by Commissioner and his team comprises of a Additional Commissioner and a Deputy Commissioner. The Directorate of Economics and Statistics department are attached to the transport department through a Statistical officer, one inspector and a field assistant to deal with statistical reports of the motor vehicles. The civil works of Transport department is under the charge of an Assistant engineer attached to the Engineering department.

All the motor vehicle registrations are taken up by the District Officers stationed at wokha, Mon, Zunheboto, Mokokchung, Tuensang and Kohima. Proposals are also being considered to have a transport officer at Phek and Dimapur.
The Motor Accident Claims tribunal based out of Dimapur adjudicates the cases related to motor accident claims. The MACT is currently headed by Mr. C.Sosang Jamir Rtd. D.C (Judicial).

Vehicle Registration

  • Registration requirement: as per section 39 of Chapter IV of IMV Act, 1988 no person shall either drive or allow others to drive a motor vehicle in public places without the registration.
  • Where to register: registration of vehicle can be done at the registration office where the person resides usually or keeps generally keeps the vehicle or where he carries on the business.
