What is the Need of Vehicle Registration in RTO

Necessity of Vehicle Registration

It is important to register one’s vehicle immediately after purchase because it involves a great deal of verification and confirmation that the vehicle has passed all the testing stages. Registration of vehicle is also the best proof of confirming one’s ownership over a vehicle. As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, all vehicles in India need to be registered, irrespective of the state in which they are purchased. The law insists that only a vehicle that is properly registered can be sold to another party.

Documents Needed for Registration

For successful registration of vehicle in RTO of your locality, you need to submit the following documents:

  • Copy of sale certificate provided by the dealer from whom you purchased your vehicle
  • Copy of road worthiness certificate issued by the manufacturer of your vehicle
  • Copy of insurance policy taken on the vehicle along with valid attestation
  • Copy of address proof
  • All other additional documents as requested by the RTO
  • Registration charges as applicable to one’s locality need to be paid
  • After personal inspection by relevant authority, the vehicle will be provided with a valid registration

Points to Ponder

  • While moving between states, you need to get “no objection” certification from the State Transport Department which you are leaving from
  • The authorising department can reject registration if the vehicle doesn’t prescribe to the rules mentioned by the Transport Department.
  • The usual validity of the registration certification is 15 years. Renewal can be done once in every 5 years.
  • Driving a vehicle that is not registered is an illegal acidity as per the law.
