Functioning under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, the Transport Department of Andhra Pradesh state follows its section 213 provisions. Purpose behind the establishment of Transport Department is to ascertain implementation of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988provisions under the guidelines of Andhra Pradesh Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1963 rules planned for this purpose. Key functions include the Enforcement of Motor Vehicles Act and Rules besides tax and fees collection and most importantly Driving Licenses & Certificate of Fitness issuance to the Transport Vehicles as part of the important roles of Transport Department’s monitoring. Other roles include registering Motor Vehicles besides regular and temporary vehicle permitgrants. Some more roles of this department are carrying out the road safety works besides planning and execution of programs such as conducting awareness campaigns to vehicle pollution checks and strict implementation of various types of measures like speeding vehicles’ booking through laser guns to detect drunken driver culprits by use of breath analyzer to interceptor vehicle and many more tasks.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh regulates the Transport Department for key elements like policy formulation and its implementation phases. Transport Commissioner administers this Department in the capacity of Department Head to supervise operation.
